Many people think that changing a cooling unit takes special skills or tools that they do not possess. Let me put it to you this way.
Anyone can install a cooling unit using basic hand tools.
Sound too good to be true? It's not. A cooling unit is a sealed system that bolts to the back of the refrigerator box. It comes pre-charged and does not require anything except bolting to the back of your refrigerator in order to operate.
Along with the cooling unit, we send detailed installation instructions that walk you step by step through the installation process. In addition to this, we have technicians available for you to speak with should you get stuck or have a question during the installation. They can be reached by calling our toll free number, 1-866-977-0877, during normal business hours.
Seal the Cooling Unit
We have seen a marked increase in the number of units that are not working as they should due to improperly sealing the perimenter of the cooling unit during installation.
If you do not seal the edges of the cooling unit, you will allow the hot air generated from normal operation of the refrigerator to seep into the refrigerator compartment from the back of the box.
The easiest way to seal the unit is to use hvac repair tape (aluminum foil backed tape) around the edges of the cooling unit. Another way is to use putty tape, available at your local hardware store. Do not use silicone, as it dries and will damage your box if you ever have to remove the cooling unit for whatever reason.
Also, run putty tape around the flange on the aluminum refrigerator fins. This aids in sealing the refrigerator compartment from the heat.
Thermal Mastic
I wanted to give a column to highlight the importance of applying thermal mastic during the installation of your new cooling unit.
Thermal Mastic is a heat transferrence putty. It is not a sealer, although some use it as such. Mastic is supposed to go on the evaporator bars that protrude from the foam block. If you do not apply it on the evaporator, then your refrigerator will not work, or it will not get cold enough.
Insufficient Mastic Application. These bars should be covered in Mastic.
