Cabinet Density Test
The insulation surrounding the cabinet on some rv refrigerators is prone to deteriorate and become less effective with age. This is a problem, as the foam can no longer insulate the refrigerator to the R value that it should.
The test for this is simple. Take your thumb and press on the cooling unit foam pack and the cabinet foam. If the foam on your replacement cooling unit is harder than the foam on your cabinet, you may have a problem.
The solution is an easy one. You will need to add extra insulation around the refrigerator cabinet. The easiest way to approach this is to use thin, aluminum foil backed bubble insulation and make a "blanket" to surround the cabinet top and sides only...not the cooling unit (the cooling unit has it's own insulation and does not require any additional). Trim the blanket so that it terminates at the edges of the cabinet and tape the edges front and back using aluminum foil backed hvacr repair tape. Make sure that the blanket does not touch the boiler assembly.
This will provide additional insulation to those units that are suffering from insulation deterioration.
